Our Earthy, Gender Neutral Nursery

Over the past 8 weeks, we have been transforming an unused room in our home into the future nursery for our soon to arrive babe (just a couple months left, I can’t even believe it!). We decided to join the One Room Challenge as a guest participant and it was incredibly fun to follow along a timeline and to watch others transform their rooms as well!

Here are some before photos of the nursery.

This little room had floor to ceiling cabinets that occupied almost 10 square feet of floor space, and pretty much nothing special going on at all. This room was primarily a dumping ground in our home, it looked and felt like it too… not ideal for a baby. We demo-ed the cabinets ourselves and repurposed them in other parts of our home, and found a beautiful wallpaper behind the cabinets but also unfortunately found mold brewing back there.

We brought in a contractor to have the mold remediated and the wallpaper removed and replaced with fresh drywall. Thankfully it was just surface mold and likely from the old leaky roof that has since been replaced! We then had a beautiful blank slate to get started on.

When we got pregnant and started planning the nursery, we knew we wanted to go in a gender neutral direction because we are keeping the gender a surprise! I wanted to design a space that the baby could grow with and that felt calm, neutral and most of all earthy.

Here is the original mood board for the space…

And the after’s… talk about a dream come true!

Over the course of 8 weeks we:

  • Demo-ed the room

  • Primed the new drywall

  • Painted the ceiling and upper portion of the wall BM stone hearth, painted the lower portion of the walls BM white dove

  • Installed trim to cover the paint seam, and baseboards

  • Changed out the light fixture

  • Refreshed the closet with a diy hand painted pattern

  • Made diy shelves with ikea shelves and suede straps

  • Installed the curtains, mirror and finishing touches

This room really turned into a special little nook in our home and I cannot wait to fill it with teeny baby clothes and have all of the newborn snuggles in that glider. I am still so in love with the accent ceiling and the fact that we carried the paint down the top portion of the wall. It creates a really warm cozy feeling in this little space and draws your eyes up! We are so excited to meet this little babe this fall and we hope this serene room will help make those long nights a little more bearable for these new parents.
