Project Planning for 2020!
For me, the start of a new year (let alone a new decade) always brings out a bunch of enthusiasm about what the coming year has to offer. I can’t help but get excited and start brainstorming about the projects I want to complete in 2020. So it got me thinking, maybe if I document my goals I can stay more accountable and take you guys along for the ride!
With that in mind, I don’t foresee this upcoming year as being a year of huge transformations (we’re still saving for those, I’m looking at you kitchen), but I do see some budget friendly updates happening that make me feel all sorts of giddy.
1. HONING IN ON MY DESIGN STYLE
I hope I’m not the only person that struggles with the amount of design inspo they see everyday. I honestly love so much of it, but also get pinterest happy and tag all of these different styles and end up getting confused about what would actually fit in our home. With the amount of content available nowadays it’s difficult to not get sucked into a pinning vortex and lose yourself somewhere between traditional, classic, mid-century, contemporary and ultra modern with a twist of farmhouse. I’ve never been to design school, so generally I just pick what I like and play it by ear and hope it looks good in the end (which surprisingly it has… I think) but I would like to become more confident in my design voice and really work to design a cohesive home for us this year!
2. PAINTING THE MAIN FLOOR
Okay I’ve been saying it since day one…. day friggen one… I (we, this is definitely going to be a we project)… ahem.. we are going to finally paint the walls in our entire main floor walls. They have bothered me since day one and have confused my furniture and art choices and I’m ready for the COLD GREY WALLS to be gone. It’s not horrible and when the sun is shining they can look very nice but on cloudy days our walls make me shiver (above is an unedited photo and you can see how much they clash). I’m ready for warm white / warm putty walls… and I promise it is going to happen this year. My goal with our home is to have a warm inviting space and even though the change isn’t going to be incredibly dramatic, I’m going to soak it all in and enjoy painting over that cold grey.
3. A NEW RUG FOR THE LIVING ROOM
I’m just going to be honest, having a jute rug with dogs is not ideal. The dog fur sticks in all the little crevices and even our dyson on “high power” doesn’t suck it out. The rug is also getting bleached by the sun and is looking discoloured and really worn. We’ve only had it for about 2 years and it is seriously deteriorating quickly (I’m so surprised actually). I want to find a vintage looking rug that has nice deep brown and charcoal tones to it and I’m excited to take you along the journey.
4. RE-DOING THE WET BAR
A space you have never seen is our wet bar downstairs and mostly because it is quite unfortunate (and so far just my husband has taken the liberty to decorate it). When we host it becomes a gathering space and people don’t seem to mind, but I would really like it to become a nice gathering space for our guests. The sink is mostly used to clean our painting supplies, the faucet leaks if your don’t push on the handles with all of your might and the countertop is a sticky disaster (mostly my fault from spray adhesive) and has stains that no amount of scrubbing can remove. Oh yeah.. and don’t even get me started on the lack of ceiling… This bar is definitely due for a refresh and I can’t wait to DIY it all!
5. PLASTERING OUR BATHROOM WALLS (+ maybe more updates there)
Okay for this one, I need some input and suggestions if you guys have any. Our bathroom has faux wood panelling (with intense wood details) and I really want to smooth it out with a plaster like finish, or maybe roman clay? Send me your ideas please! But I need to have a little less texture in this space and smoother walls, and while I’m at it…maybe a new countertop, sink, faucet, mirror and light fixture? You know, just a quick wall plastering was all I had in mind…
6. and if we get real motivated PAINTING OUR KITCHEN CABINETS
Now that I’m typing this all out and seeing the list of things I want to accomplish this year.. I definitely need to be real motivated to get to painting our kitchen cabinets… not sure if I’ll get there but you gotta be inspired right! There are a couple random “trim pieces” I’d like to remove around our kitchen… and if it happens we would need to paint our cabinets to cover up any differences in the wood. Our house seriously has 50 shades of wood and it would be nice to minimize one of those wood tones, especially since this kitchen is looking so worn. Although it definitely needs a full gut job, we are not quite there yet so paint will have to do. What colour would you paint these cabinets?
Nothing makes me happier than improving the space that our family gets to enjoy, I really really love our home and can’t wait to see what it looks like a year from now! Which project are you looking forward to? Let me know below in the comments!
