We’re Renovating Our Kitchen!

Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming! Ahhhh! We are really doing a kitchen reno and I am way too excited! I can’t wait to fill you in on all of the details and although we are doing more of a “refresh” than a full remodel, I am still so excited about this project!

Let’s take a walk through memory lane, this is the kitchen right when we moved in…

We removed the beadboard backsplash and installed some white tile and under cabinet lighting. It really brightened the kitchen that was feeling so dull before and felt like a major improvement.

We also snagged a stainless steel fridge off marketplace for $100 so that all of our appliances match, and those are the only changes we made since moving in. Quite boring but functional and has lasted us a good 3 years… but now I’m ready for a change!

So for the new kitchen we decided to remove a wall, eeeee!!! The wall that currently separates the kitchen and dining room (wall with the fridge) is coming down and I could not be more excited! It is a non load bearing wall and will really open up our floor plan to the kitchen while also still allowing it to be a defined space from our living room. With the wall removal we’ll have a small beam so that we can keep the crown moulding intact and we will also be keeping the teak built-in that’s in the dining room. Our plan is to have the kitchen cabinets continue right into the teak built-in and we haven’t quite figured out the exact transition yet but we will decide once the wall is gone.

So at the beginning of this post I said this project was more of a “refresh” than a full remodel and thats because we are keeping most of our existing cabinets and the tile backsplash we installed. We’ll be adding some new cabinetry, and will paint the existing cabinets to match.

So without further ado, here is the mood board for the new kitchen!

How dreamy is this going to be, right!? So we are going to be adding some new Ikea cabinets in a beautiful putty beige colour (the Havstorp line) and will paint the rest of our cabinets to match. Brass hardware (knobs, pulls) from Rejuvenation is going to line our cabinets and we’ll be getting new laminate counters in a faux soapstone finish. We’ll be updating the sink to a black granite sink with a new faucet. And how pretty are those new lights!! We’ll be wiring up two new sconces above our window and will update our flush mount light to this pretty shaded semi-flush mount fixture. And lastly, I’ll patch up the tile and continue it to the ceiling, add some floating shelves and finish the space off with a new Loloi rug from the Amber Lewis collection!

I thought showing some renderings from our Ikea home plan would help provide some clarity on the layout for the new space so check these out and drop any questions below! Both of these views are from the dining room side looking in towards the kitchen and show our plan for new cabinets and a mock-up for the shelving (it will be much more streamlined and modern but you get the idea). We will be removing the corner cabinet that is near the dishwasher and will start the floating shelf from there and carry it around to the other side of the window.

Wall demo starts early december and we will likely be starting a lot of the small projects before then. We are too excited to get started and we can’t wait to share this journey with you!
